Peace talks began in July 1951, but it took 2 years before an agreement was finally reached in July 1953. The main reasons
why peace was made were:
- Truman was replaced by President Eisenhower, who wanted peace
- Stalin died leaving North Korea and China unsure if they would receive support from the USSR.
North and South Korea were split at the 38th parallel and a demilitarised zone was created between the two countries to try to
prevent a future war.
The agreement was only intended as a temporary truce until a full peace settlement could be made but this never happened.
