The Geneva Agreement was signed in 1954. It temporarily split Vietnam along the 17th parallel into North Vietnam, a
Communist nation, ruled by Ho Chi Minh, and South Vietnam, a capitalist country, led by President Diem.
It included a plan for elections in 1956 which would unite Vietnam. However the government of South Vietnam never held these
elections because they feared that Ho Chi Minh would win and the USA supported South Vietnam in this.
Neither China nor the USA liked the Geneva agreement.
