Public Health since 1945

The NHS has grown massively since it started and now costs about ten times as much as it first did. It is now able to achieve far more than it ever could before. The government has run single-issue public health campaigns against smoking in the 1970s and about AIDS in the 1980s. A key issue today is obesity, with diabetes accounting for 10% of all NHS spending, so modern public health involves education about diet and exercise. The NHS is now struggling to cope with demand so there is a wide debate about how it will be funded in the future.
