Alternative Medicine
Opponents of modern medicine believe that it is too interventionist and can be harmful. They point to drugs like thalidomide, a treatment for morning sickness in the 1970s, which caused terrible birth defects. They argue that it is often better to let nature take its course - like Hippocrates and Sydenham had argued. Some people now promote Complementary Medicine which goes alongside clinical treatment and Alternative Medicine which replaces it.
Therapies include Hypnotherapy, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture and Homeopathy.
There is limited evidence for the effectiveness of these treatments and some of them, such as homeopathy contradict some fundamental scientific theories.
