In 1819, life in Northern England was incredibly tough. After the Napoleonic Wars, the country faced a massive economic slump.

No Vote: Most working-class people had no say in how the country was run. Cities like Manchester didn’t even have their own MP!
Hunger: The Corn Laws made bread prices sky-high, leaving many families starving.
Low Wages: Factory workers were being paid less and less for harder work.

Around 60,000 peaceful protesters—men, women, and children—gathered at St. Peter’s Field in Manchester to hear the famous speaker Henry Hunt.

The Crowd: They wore their best clothes and carried banners calling for "Liberty" and "Universal Suffrage" (the right to vote).
The Panic: Local magistrates grew nervous at the size of the crowd and ordered the army (the Yeomanry) to arrest Henry Hunt.
The Attack: Soldiers charged into the crowd with sharpened sabers. In the chaos, 15 people were killed and over 600 were injured.
The Name: Journalists called it "Peterloo," a sarcastic nod to the Battle of Waterloo, because the army had attacked its own unarmed citizens.

Peterloo was a turning point in British history. Even though the government initially tried to silence the protesters with stricter laws, the event:

Sparked Change: It became a symbol of the struggle for democracy.
The Press: It led to the founding of The Guardian newspaper to ensure the truth was told.
Long-term Impact: It eventually helped lead to the Great Reform Act of 1832, which began the process of giving more people the right to vote.
