How Sikhism Began

Sikhism is a religion that originated in the Punjab region of South Asia, which is now divided between India and Pakistan. It was founded by Guru Nanak, who was born in 1469 in a village called Talwandi, which is now in present-day Pakistan.

When Guru Nanak was a child, he showed great interest in spirituality and had deep thoughts about the nature of life and God. As he grew up, he started to travel and meet people from different religions and backgrounds. During his journeys, Guru Nanak observed that people were divided by caste, religion, and other social differences, which caused conflicts and inequalities.

Guru Nanak wanted to promote unity, equality, and love among people. He believed that there is only one God who created everyone and that all human beings are equal, regardless of their religion, caste, or social status. He also emphasized the importance of honest work, sharing with others, and living a truthful and virtuous life.

Guru Nanak taught his message through hymns and songs that he composed. His teachings were passed down through a line of ten successive Gurus, who guided the Sikh community after him. They compiled his hymns and writings along with their own into a holy book called the Guru Granth Sahib, which is considered the eternal Guru of the Sikhs.

The Sikhs faced challenges and persecution during their early history, but they remained committed to their beliefs and values. Sikhism grew as a community and developed distinct customs and traditions. The Sikhs wear turbans as a symbol of their faith and follow the principles of honesty, compassion, selfless service, and equality.

So, in simple words, Sikhism began with Guru Nanak, who wanted to bring people together and promote equality and love for everyone. His teachings were passed down through the ten Gurus, and Sikhism has since become a vibrant religion with its own beliefs and practices.
