Life for peasants was tough. They were farmers who grew everything their family needed to eat. They were also controlled by their local lord so they were known as villeins.

The Feudal System

The Feudal System was introduced to England by William the Conqueror as a way to organise society. Land was passed down from the rich to the poor in return for services and loyalty.

The King - owned all the land.
Barons - received land and promised to provide knights.
Knights - received land and promised to fight in the King's army for 40 days a year.
Villeins - received land but had to work for their Lord (Knight) for free, for example by harvesting his crops before they could gather their own.
